How Mayflower Artistry Started

I started pressing flowers in 2022. What began as a side hustle alongside my full-time nannying job quickly grew into something much more meaningful. I opened my Etsy shop and charged just enough to cover the cost of framing because I was passionate about offering wedding bouquet preservation at an affordable rate.

I quickly learned why professional flower preservation artists charge what they do. It isn’t simply pressing flowers inside a book – it is a detailed, time-consuming art that requires patience, experience, and an understanding of how different blooms respond to the preservation process.

Now going into year five, I am still learning. There are hundreds of flower varieties – from delicate roses to textured greenery and filler accents… each one behaves differently when pressed. I often find myself saying, “well, this one is different,” and choosing specific techniques to preserve wedding flowers just right. Bridal bouquet preservation is never one-size-fits-all.

Going from side hustle to full-time flower preservation has had its ups and downs. Flowers still turn brown sometimes. Certain bouquets arrive with minimal selections, and designing pressed flower art with limited materials can feel challenging. Because I work with flowers supplied by my clients, I rarely choose the blooms myself.

Creating day in and day out can feel draining at times- just like any profession- but preserving wedding bouquets and memorial flowers is always meaningful.

My very first bridal bouquet for preservation was flown home from Costa Rica after a dear friend trusted me to transform her fresh wedding flowers into artwork. Before that, I had practiced using leftover blooms from weddings my mom worked. I felt confident in my pressing techniques and ready to take wedding flower preservation more seriously.

When I opened my Etsy shop, I truly didn’t expect it to grow. My first official order came from a local client when I was living in Maryland. A complete stranger trusted me to preserve a few flowers from her friend’s wedding bouquet. When she later told me her friend cried upon receiving the finished pressed flower frame all the way in Canada, I remember thinking, “Could this really go somewhere?”

Each year, interest in wedding bouquet preservation and pressed flower art continued to grow. What started as a creative outlet slowly became financially stable enough to support me full-time. Serving brides in Jacksonville, St. Augustine, and beyond has been one of the most unexpected blessings of my life.

Memorial flower preservation holds a particularly tender place in my heart. The arrangements created to honor a grandmother, sibling, parent, or friend often carry layers of love and intention. Many clients include memorial cards, handwritten notes, or scripture verses to incorporate into their custom pressed flower frame, creating a lasting tribute.

One of the most meaningful preservation stories happened in 2024. A woman reached out with sunflowers and roses she wanted preserved in a frame for her mother. The flowers had been sent to the funeral of a gentleman who arranged for them to be delivered to his own service, prior to his passing. The note explained that the five roses represented the five people who meant the most to him. Preserving those memorial flowers felt especially sacred.

That same year, I created a custom heart-shaped pressed flower piece after a client lost her grandfather and wanted the original shape of the arrangement maintained. Just weeks later, she hand-delivered another heart-shaped arrangement, this time in pink, after losing her grandmother shortly after. I preserved flowers from both grandparents, turning their memorial arrangements into heirloom artwork.

Flowers tell stories of love, loss, birth, celebration, and everything in between. To experience them both fresh and preserved is a gift that is difficult to explain. Wedding flowers, especially, hold emotion long after the ceremony ends. Through professional wedding bouquet preservation, those fleeting blooms can last more than one day.
